About Us

Welcome to the Manawatu Camera Club.

The Club's aim is to promote the enjoyment of photography for individuals and the community.

On this website you will find a lot of information about how the club operates - our club nights and our monthly competitions, field trips and more - however, nothing beats seeing for yourself. So just come along and experience it, or contact us via email or phone first if you prefer. We're a large friendly enthusiastic group of all ages and we enjoy meeting new faces and we’ll be pleased to answer all your questions.

Forget all those bad light and out-of-focus family photos of the past; over time, and with practice, members learn to take great photos that more than impress their family and friends. Whatever your interests, from Street Photography, Portraiture, Macro, Landscape, Travel Photography, Architecture, Night Photography (long exposures, light trails and so on), Colour or Black & White, Fine Art and much more, we cover it all, and that includes Digital Post Processing techniques as well (Photoshop and others). The club also has a studio with backdrops and studio lighting. The annual membership fee is very inexpensive and while you will need to own (or have access to) a camera, you don’t need the latest and most expensive camera to make great images. Some members have a basic inexpensive camera, while a few have top-of-the-line equipment, and the rest have something in between. Club members also receive very good photo printing discount off recommended retail too!

Manawatu Camera Club is affiliated with PSNZ Photographic Society of New Zealand

The Club has existed since 24 May 1947 - for over 65 years - an indication of the enthusiasm of members who share the passion of making images and sharing their work. There is evidence that even over 100 years ago a Manawatu Camera Club existed.Photography can be fun, challenging, creative and a new area of learning. Photography can be enjoyed by people of all ages and cultures. You will know which photographs you treasure. They may have been taken last week or 100 years ago. Come along to the Camera Club and see the images from other amateur photographers. Learn the art of seeing and the art of using the magic of changing light.

We have an exciting programme with workshops, visiting evaluators, trips and conventions!

Do join us at our Clubrooms at Ruahine Football Clubrooms, corner Te Awe Awe and Jickell, on the second and fourth Mondays of each month (January excluded), for Photo Judging and practical nights (respectively)!  For specific details of each night, including the occasional meeting at a different venue, please check the upcoming events page. Visitors are always welcome.  Start time is 7.30pm.

There is no requirement to enter competitions. If you enjoy photography and wish to enjoy the social side of photography - we welcome you and your family! Visitors may like to attend meetings two or three times before deciding to join the Club.

Our Club is 100 Years Old

Here a reprint of a 100-year old notice found in the Manawatu Standard on the 17 of April 2006.

There is little known about the club's history. This notice found in the Manawatu Standard makes us believe that the club existed over 100 years ago. Some documents show that the Club was incorporated on 24 May 1947 and people take this as the birthday of the Manawatu Camera Club Inc.
