I am a relative newcomer to photography. I decided to buy a new camera in 2002 as my wife and I were going to be travelling overseas more frequently and I wanted to be able to take more than just snapshots. I did a nightschool course to find out what I needed in a camera, but quickly got wrapped up in composition and the technical requirements needed to create an image. I bought a film SLR camera and got started.

I joined the camera club last year and besides meeting some lovely people have learnt a great deal about photography and improved my images. The enthusiasm is infectious. I have now got a digital SLR which enables me to learn so much faster.

My preferred subjects are landscape, nature and low-light photography although I will look at anything to understand the qualities of light more.

Some of my Work

Damselfly

I liked the blue and pink colours on its abdomen which echoed the colours in the background.

Energy

I had to get down in the valley far enough to silhouette the turbine against the setting sun.

TeApiti Dawn

The aerial perspective appearing as a subtle gradation of colour that I wanted to capture.

Whitewaiters

It was a cold grey day but as we stood and watched, the sun broke through the clouds enough to spotlight the central whitebaiter.
