Rae Nicholls

Retirement is not the end of the world - it's just the beginning. Although I've been keen on taking snaps from the age of eight it wasn't until I was in my sixties that I decided to learn what make's cameras tick. I joined the New Zealand College for Seniors and enrolled in a nature photography group tutored by Peter Harper, Professor of Photography at Christchurch University. Our classroom was the wide open spaces, the lakes and mountains of the South Island. Peter, an eminent nature photographer and author of several books on the subject, drove us in his twelve seater van and stopped at his favourite photographic spots, places off the beaten track that I had never seen before. He explained how to use the f stop for taking close ups to blot out the background and how to take a landscape picture showing every detail clearly from the foreground to the background.
After the one week course I arrived home in Palmerston North, joined the Manawatu Camera Club and learned how to present my images for competitions.
