Competition Topics 2012
Collecting day is the second Monday of each month.
Collecting in February for judging in March
Abstract
Abstract photography allows for a diverse range of photo styles to shoot. It allows you more creative freedom to play around with shutter speed, and depth of field. You may zoom in on a familiar object, or look for interesting patterns and shapes.
Collecting in March for judging in April
Chiaroscuro
Chiaroscuro is an Italian term that literally means ‘light-dark’. It was initially developed by painters such as da vinci to add more depth to a painting. It does this by showing high contrasts between light and dark across the image.
Collecting in April for judging in May
“Contrast”
This month submit an image that shows contrast. This may be either visual contrast between light and dark; or thematic contrast such as rich/poor, old/young etc.
Collecting in May for judging in June
Kindness
A useful attribute of a photographer is to show emotion in a picture. This month, photograph a scene that embodies kindness.
Collecting in June for judging in July
Old Abandoned and Neglected
This month try to find a subject that has seen better days. These subjects can often produce dramatic images. Perhaps post-processing can really enhance images taken in this subject area.
Collecting in July for judging in August
Roadtrip
The road-trip is a quintessential part of the kiwi summer. It’s the main way we get out and about to our favourite spots. However, often the journey is just as beautiful. This month present images that embody the road trip, accentuating the journey rather than the destination.
Collecting in August for judging in September
Still Life
Still life photography has its roots to some of the great paintings of the 1600s and 1700s. It shows images containing inanimate objects, usually in a small group. For this reason, choose the arrangement carefully so that all the elements in the shot balance each-other well. Add light to where you need it, and set up the camera in the perfect spot. There is no need to rush, take your time and re-shoot until you like what you’ve shot.
Collecting in September for judging in October
People Based Street Shots
Walking through the city you see all kinds of characters. This month submit an image portraying a people-based street shot. This should not be a set up. It should be totally candid and unrehearsed. Ideally it should be in the styles of Henri Cartier-Bresson or Garry Winogrand. They captured decisive moments whilst walking/driving city streets. A bit scary, but to score well they should be moments "as they happened" and without the subject(s) having a clue about what happened. It should depict everyday occurrences with a bit of magic.
Collecting in October for judging in November
Water
Water is a great photographic subject that has intrigued photographers. Water symbolises health, wellbeing, and etc. Try to enter a photo where water is the subject of the image, rather than just a part of it.
